Sue Windels is currently a Colorado State Senator, representing District 19 which includes most of Arvada and Jeffco portions of Westminster. She was first elected to the Colorado State Legislature in November 1998. After serving one term in the House of Representatives, she was elected to the Senate in November 2000, re-elected in November 2004 for a second and final (term limits) term. She served as Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and also served as a member of the State Affairs Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Capital Development Committee, and the Oversight Committee for the Mentally Ill in the Criminal Justice System.
Sue Windels has written, published, and distributed (walking door-to-door) her newsletter, “The Voters’ Voice” to constituents for 12 years and sent out weekly email messages to constituents in an effort to keep people informed and involved in the legislative process.
Sue Windels is a teacher beginning her career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador and Honduras and subsequently teaching in Washington State, Arizona and Colorado. Her teaching experience ranges from kindergarten to high school and from traditional classrooms to individualized instruction for at-risk children.
Sue Windels has a long history of volunteer service having served as PTA Legislative chairman for many years publishing a free legislative issue newsletter for parents for many years. Sue also belongs to the Arvada-Jefferson Kiwanis Club, the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women.
Sue Windels has been married to her husband, Carl, for 34 years and has two sons, Derek, who is an architect living in California, and Dan, who is a third year medical school student at CU Health Sciences. She also has a cockatiel named Sparky.
